About Us

Gilford High School, home of the Golden Eagles, is located in the historic center of Gilford Village. The school is situated on approximately twenty acres adjacent to town fields and recreational facilities. The original building opened in 1974 and a comprehensive high school renovation was completed in 2004.

We have a 9-12 grade configuration with a total enrollment of approximately 470 students. The town of Gilmanton also sends students to Gilford High School, and Gilmanton students comprise about one-third of the school's population. The teaching staff totals 39.8 teachers creating a student to teacher ratio of 14:1. In addition, the professional staff includes 3.5 guidance counselors, 5 special education teachers, College & Career Coordinator, nurse, media specialist, directed study specialist, Athletic Director, and a School Resource Officer. There are also an Assistant Principal and Principal. In those classes required for graduation, the average class size is sixteen. Other than band and chorus, a strong attempt is made to limit class sizes to no more than 24 students. The average student attendance rate for the past three years is 95% percent.

The school operates on a trimester, block schedule. The day consists of five seventy-minute periods. All students are expected to take five courses each trimester. Students are required to earn 24 credits in order to graduate. Single-trimester, half-credit courses run every day for 60 days. Thus, students have the opportunity to earn 7.5 credits each year.

Gilford High School issues a competency based diploma. Student performance in school is measured by course competencies in trimester grade reports. Each trimester-long course has from two to five essential competencies, each of which must be mastered with a passing grade before graduation credit is assigned. A final exam at the end of each trimester constitutes 15% of each course competency and course grade. Student progress each trimester is monitored through MMS; a computerized student grade reporting system that is accessible by parents and students via the internet and allows frequent and consistent monitoring of student's performance by parents and school personnel. We are part of a regional consortium with the J.Oliva Huot Technical Center at Laconia High School which offers GHS students in grades 10, 11 and 12 the opportunity to enroll in career and technical education programs during the school day.

GHS offers a variety of co-curricular activities for enrichment and approximately seventy percent of students participate in these activities. A sampling of student activities includes the following: Bagel and Book Club, Chess, National Honor Society, Student Council, Varsity Club, Math Team, Drama, Rotary Interact, Concert and Pep Band, Environmental Club, First Robotics, Youth and Government, Amnesty International, and Granite State Challenge. Gilford offers nineteen sports and has thirty-nine teams.
