Good Evening,

A very good week at GHS! The students stepped up and rose to the challenge for winter carnival. I was most pleased with their behavior this week while having a lot of fun.

Our girl’s downhill ski team got second in the division last week. So close to winning a state title.

We wish our world travelers well as they depart for Costa Rica. Thank you to Janice Stowell for organizing such a worthwhile opportunity for our students so they get a taste of a different culture.

I want to inform you of a schedule change that will occur when students return from February break. Students currently have advisory twice a week on Tuesdays and Fridays from 9:54-10:14. When students return from February break, they will have advisory on Tuesdays for the same amount of time. The Friday advisory time will be added back into our five instructional blocks as we revamp advisory by addressing the objectives below.

Over the past few months, information has been gathered from students and staff members about advisory. It is clear from all that information I collected that students and staff would like for each advisory to work towards a common purpose. We will work to have greater consistency so that each student is exposed to the same activities throughout advisory.

Advisory serves the purpose of showing that the school community takes collective responsibility for the intellectual, physical, social, and emotional well-being of every student and can demonstrate how each student is known, valued, and connected to the school community. Gilford High School will achieve this purpose by...

  • Advising students about academic decisions and monitor academic achievement
  • Providing developmental guidance (both formal and informal)
  • Fostering communication between the home and school and among members of the school community
  • Encouraging supportive peer relationships and practice conflict resolution
  • Promoting an awareness of diversity and acceptance
  • Undertaking community service both within and outside the school
  • Facilitating community governance and conversations
  • Preparing students for life transitions including career development and post-secondary opportunities
  • Promoting character development and explore moral dilemmas
  • Exploring the process of group development and have fun

We will continue to evaluate advisory by speaking with students and staff members as we move forward so that we can provide an experience that will allow for each child to feel valued and connected at Gilford High School.

Good luck to our robotic engineers as they compete at WPI next weekend!

I hope you all have an enjoyable break with your child.
